During October of 1928, in the classrooms of 72 schools on the West Coast, radios began tuning to stations of NBC's Pacific Network (the Orange Network) to hear The Standard School Broadcast. At a time when the mass communication potential of radio was in its infancy, this bold experiment must have been a wonder to the students.

Sponsored by the Standard Oil Company of California, the series was widely praised as a medium of music education, presenting not only performances but discussions of musical theory as well as introducing both classical and popular music forms such as Jazz and folk.

In addition to the award-winning music education, the Chevron Research Company released a series of forty recordings titled "Our Nation's Heritage" as a public service in the 1970s. The LP records, with teachers guides, were available free of charge to elementary and junior high schools throughout the West, Rocky Mountain area and the Southwest.
